Timeless Design Isn’t Real (and that’s not a bad thing)

I hear it all the time:

“I just want something timeless.”

And I get it. You don’t want to spend money and regret it years later.

But here’s the truth no one really says out loud.

Timeless Design doesn’t exist.

I can walk into a house from the 1970s and know exactly when it was designed….give or take a couple years 😉

Same with a house from 2010.

Same with homes being built right now.

Every single space reflects the time it was created. The materials, the layout, the details and even proportions- they give it all away. So, this idea that we can somehow design outside of time? Not real.

When I hear someone say “timeless”, what they really mean is:

“I don’t want to get this wrong”

“I don’t want bold selections”

So they start playing it safe.

White walls.

Neutral everything.

No risk.

No personality.

And that is somehow supposed to age better.

Well, friends, it doesn’t.

It just makes your house feel like it could belong to anyone. Which ironically is very specific to what I call the “HGTV/Instagram era” around 2010. We began getting inundated with home renovation shows (thank you Joanna Gaines) and, therefore, the industry started optimizing for resale value and broad likability instead of individuality.

You didn’t avoid a trend.

You just picked the quieter one.

What does hold up over time are spaces designed with clarity:

Materials that get better and not worse.

Layouts that actually work for your family.

Choices that feel like someone stood behind them.

I can tell when a space was designed by someone who trusted the professional’s point of view. And that will always land differently than a space designed to avoid judgement.

The bottom line is this: your home is going to reflect a moment in time. That’s unavoidable. Stop trying to erase that. Make it intentional instead because in 10 or 20 years your space will tell a story. The goal isn’t to make sure no one can date it.

The goal is to make sure it was worth remembering.
